If you’re like me, then you have come to the realization of how important sleep is.
I’ll be honest, I wish we didn’t have to spend 8 of our precious 24 hours a day being unconscious, but for whatever reason, that’s how God has designed the universe; within rhythms and patterns.
After having kids, I thought I would never sleep well again. But, if I am being honest with myself, I didn’t exactly have the best sleep habits before that. Unfortunately, being in the film and video industry, I was taught to prioritize being productive and working for long periods of time and if that meant staying up late, then you stayed up late... sometimes into the wee hours of the morning staring at artificially lit screens for hours on end and stressing out about deadlines. Sleep was not the priority, getting stuff done was. This resulted in high levels of cortisol, low melatonin production, and no real sleep schedule, which destroyed my circadian rhythm. I just didn’t feel much of the effects until I got older...
But I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired and decided to do something about it. I dove into learning about sleep and how important it actually is to our health, vitality, mood and cognition. It doesn’t matter how much time you spend working, if you are not at your best you won’t get much done. And it only gets worse the less sleep you get.
And aside from work, being generally energized, and having brain function, sleep is vital to health and wellness.
As Mathew Walker says in his book ‘Why We Sleep’ -
“the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life. The leading causes of disease and death in developed nations—diseases that are crippling health-care systems, such as heart disease, obesity, dementia, diabetes, and cancer—all have recognized causal links to a lack of sleep.”
